Training Resources

Universal design for learning offers an educational framework that can maximize learning opportunities for all students in the classroom. The UDL Guidelines can provide focal points for considering effective strategies and technologies to empower educators to become creative instructional designers of their classrooms.

Below are some examples of ways to incorporate UDL into activities :

  • Offer blocks that have texture, make sounds and can be color coded.
  • Provide dress-up cloths that have large openings and simple closures.
  • Add art materials that are scented and have different textures.
  • Read books with sound, textures, high contrast, and/or easy-to-turn pages.
  • Choose balls with textures, tails, scents, sounds, and/or lights.

Other ways to incorporate UDL are as follows:

  • Build it up by adding handles, buttons, and knobs for easier use.

  • Stabilize it to keep things from sliding or tipping.

  • Simplify it by making the task easier and more obvious.

  • Contain it within a range or area to help the child understand where to be.

  • Add sensory cues to make materials/toys more fun.

  • Incorporate alternatives into the daily routine.

  • Encourage cooperation so that everyone gets what they need.
